  1. Caracas is the chief city and capital of 
  2. Venezuela. It is situated on the slopes of 
  3. the Andes Mountains. In 1989 the metropolitan
  4. area had a population of 3,373,100. It is now
  5. a large industrial and commercial centre, 
  6. notably for oil companies. It has many fine 
  7. buildings.
  8. The city has also suffered several severe
  9. earthquakes.
